The Ashland, OR bike builder set out to travel the road less traveled, yet <a title=\"angry designers are questioning cp+b's integrity\" href=\"http:\/\/designis.ms\/brand-identity\/crispin-porter-bogusky-has-no-integrity-for-design\/\" target=\"_blank\">the uproar<\/a> over the latest wrinkle from the South Florida ad shop charged with making their market is not what&#8217;s needed in a struggling channel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background:<\/strong> Swoopy machine with state-of-the-art content; aluminum frame, lithium ion fuel, quirky &#8211; quirky? &#8211; naming strategy. Nicely interactive work-in-progress web site. Looks like a well constructed, well thought out machine that, if not ready for the masses, is certainly intriguing, albeit pricey, for some of us who already ride. So far, so good.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Building an all new, ground up anything ain\u2019t cheap. Brammo was (reportedly) able to secure $10M in financing from <strong>Big Box Electronic Gadget Best Buy\u2019s <\/strong>venture capital arm. And Best Buy is where Brammo\u2019s now sold, in the process bypassing traditional powersports resellers for a mass retailer. In for a penny, in for a pound.<\/p>\n<p>Best Buy also has a product installation and service division called Geek Squad, a cleverly branded concept whose advertising duties have recently been handed to <strong>Crispin Porter and Bogusky<\/strong> (CP+B), a major agency headquartered in Miami and outposted in Boulder, CO, Santa Monica and London. Most famous for their often controversial <strong>Burger King<\/strong> efforts and recently selected by <strong>Harley Davidson<\/strong> as Buell\u2019s new shop their reported billings are in excess of $1 billion. That\u2019s an important number.<\/p>\n<p>So in a move that left many ad industry watchers scratching their heads, CP+B put their current crop of interns up for bid on eBay. Brammo won, some suggest as a result of inside relationships, at just under $18K. Strike one.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-579\" title=\"no!spec is the website for a philosophy that values creative content\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/siebenthalercreative.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/no-spec180u.gif?resize=180%2C101\" alt=\"no!spec is the website for a philosophy that values creative content\" width=\"180\" height=\"101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/siebenthalercreative.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/no-spec180u.gif?w=180&amp;ssl=1 180w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/siebenthalercreative.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/no-spec180u.gif?resize=150%2C84&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/>Then CP+B opened up a so-called \u201ccrowdsource\u201d competition to design a fresh new logo for Brammo\u2019s brand, a process otherwise known as <a title=\"the reaction is definitely frosty, and it's being thrashed all over the internet\" href=\"http:\/\/www.no-spec.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">spec work<\/a>, solicited from over 700 respondents as grist for the mill.<\/p>\n<p>Now, everyone familiar with agencies knows uncompensated pitches are the norm in a client dictates conditions world. What isn\u2019t so well known is the <a title=\"anger is spreading throughout the graphic arts industry\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mediabistro.com\/agencyspy\/crispin_porter_bogusky\/cpbs_gets_grief_for_crowdsourcing_logo_own_site_used_against_them_129629.asp\" target=\"_blank\">genuine feeling of loathing<\/a> generated amongst creative independents when asked to sing for their supper. Supper, in this case, being the $1,000 \u201caward\u201d if selected to grace the flanks of a $12K machine benefitting from $10M in angel money. Offered by a shop billing over a billion real bucks. Wow! A shiny new quarter towards my Christmas layaway!<\/p>\n<p>There is a pattern here, a pattern perfected by CP+B, that basically <strong>creates outrage and then exploits the attending noteriety<\/strong>. Some might call it crazy backwards PR, which seems to be what\u2019s happening here as applied to the client\u2019s interests.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve never been a big fan of CP+B\u2019s product. Maybe a little, back in the beginning based on their creative for Virgin, but not much since. Wrong demos, but plenty of others like their look and let\u2019s face it, you don\u2019t pick up agency of the year awards for slack-jawed work product.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll close this little narrative for now by wondering exactly what kind of advice Brammo\u2019s gleaning from those fresh-faced interns? As we understand events, the courtship has now moved to a more traditionally compensated client-agency relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Which is interepreted by our Magik Marketing Eight Ball as a small, entry level product rep\u2019d by a mega-giganto shop to sell way expensive electric motorcycles alongside the appliances section of a big box retailer specializing in home theater and iPods.
